Huawei’s New Triple Camera Smartphone Is Making Our iPhones Look Bad

The cameras on our smartphones are getting better and better. With the release of every new smartphone model, the emphasis on what the camera is capable of doing is always a major selling point. The Chinese smartphone company Huawei’s new model is no exception. In fact, seems intent on leaving the rest of the competition in it’s dust. 

The smartphone company just revealed the P20 Pro which is the first smartphone to include a triple camera system. With that comes the unique ability to take photos, without a flash, in near-dark conditions,  further closing the gap between the professional camera and the consumer model.

The three cameras are: a main camera, a telephoto, and a secondary camera.

The Main Camera: this is going to be most similar to the camera you have on your smartphone right now, though it comes with an unusually high total resolution of 40 megapixels. Now, too many pixels in a small sensor can lead to digital noise in your photos, but the P20’s sensor is roughly twice the size of what is common in most other phones—the bigger sensor allows more light to be captured, which, generally, will lead to less noise.

Telephoto Camera: Since the iPhone 7 Plus, Apple has included an additional telephoto camera, most notably for portrait mode. What is cool about Huawei’s phone is the lens itself, which offers a much narrower field of view—which, because there is less distortion than, say, a wide angle less, will be much better for portraits. The camera lens also has optical image stabilization built in, which will reduce the blur that results from a moving camera. It also offers a 3x zoom, compared with the 2x zoom of the iPhone X.

Secondary Camera: The secondary camera is designed specially as a support system for the other camera—the black and white only images are used predominantly to provide image data to the other cameras on the phone. It will be able to pull specific detail from a scene, for example, how add detail to the digital zoom, which will provide depth information for the main camera and add image quality to the digital zoom.

This is the camera that will help with the near-dark photography. The low-light performance, with a maximum ISO of 102,000+, is up there with some pro-grade DSLRs.

Apart from that, the phone also utilizes artificial Intelligence technology to assist in stabilization, composition, and a predictive focus feature, which will keep focus on a subject by predicting their movement. It’ll also be able to shoot in super slow motion at 960fps.

If you have gotten this far and don’t know who the heck Huawei is, that’s okay, it’s not your fault. Though they are on the edge of becoming the most successful smartphone manufacturer in the world, they just haven’t managed to break into the US market. So, unfortunately, here in the U.S. we won’t be getting our hands on this phone anytime soon. But the fact that the technology is out there means it’s inevitable that it eventually reaches the phones that are available to us. We just might have to wait a little bit.
